Decision summary

  2. Census County Business Patterns 2023, legal form -: 135,337 establishments and 480,272 employees in 236118. This is not a count of odd-job handymen alone.
  3. The same file counts 39,072 establishments in 236220. 18,803 have fewer than 5 employees, which is 48.1% (18,803 ÷ 39,072). Do not add 135,337 and 39,072.
  4. California’s Contractors State License Board, press release December 30, 2024, says Assembly Bill 2622 raises the minor-work threshold from $500 to $1,000 on January 1, 2025. CSLB.

0. Jobs you can add up

  • Pick repairs whose labor and materials you can total before you accept them.
  • A faucet and a room addition are not the same trade. The index puts residential handyman construction service next to remodeling contractors.
  • If you work in California and you are not licensed, read the $1,000 line before you advertise.

Handyman startup costs

A national startup total is not on this page. No tool or van shelf price opened on November 6, 2026. Insurance is one readable line. The California threshold is a legal line, not a startup budget.

One state’s minor-work line and one insurance sample. Tools are missing on purpose.

The license line

California is the state page that was opened. Every other state is Not yet researched.

CSLB’s December 30, 2024 release says Assembly Bill 2622, effective January 1, 2025, lets a person who is not licensed complete small projects up to $1,000 if they do not hire workers and no building permits are needed. If the project under $1,000 needs workers or a permit, a license is required. The $1,000 includes all costs. An advertisement for that work must say the person is not licensed. A bid over $1,000, permit work, or employing workers can bring administrative fines of up to $15,000, jail of up to six months, and fines up to $5,000. The same release says a down payment should not exceed 10 percent of the contract price. CSLB says it licenses about 285,000 contractors.

Insurance

Insureon’s handyman page lists general liability at $81 a month, a business owner’s policy at $105, workers’ compensation at $108, and commercial auto at $188. Updated July 31, 2026. The method note says median of handymen who apply for quotes; the headings say average. Roofing is called out on that page as higher-risk than fixing a wall. Get the quote for the jobs you will actually take. A California license and this premium are different documents.

Does the job pay?

Profit on one job is the price minus paid minutes minus materials. Profit for the month also has to clear the van, insurance, and any license fee once you know those bills. In California, add labor and materials first and compare the total with $1,000 if you are not licensed. The establishment count does not set the price. No average weekly income was opened.

Price one job

Type the price, the minutes on the job, the minutes driving, and what you spend on materials. Empty stays unknown.

Enter a price, minutes, and a loaded hourly rate.

10. A helper

In California, employing anyone removes the minor-work exemption even under $1,000. Add a helper when the license covers the work and the contribution still covers the wage. The section number is an outline label, not a crew size. A Bureau of Labor Statistics wage page returned HTTP 403 on November 6, 2026, so no wage is printed.

First 90 days

  • Days 1–14: list the jobs you will accept, and the ones that need a permit or a license in your state.
  • Days 15–45: if you are in California and not licensed, keep each project under the $1,000 line, with no employees and no permit. Price insurance before the first paid job.
  • Days 46–90: time real jobs in the tool. Hire only after the license question is settled and the jobs cover labor, materials, and the month’s fixed costs.

When to stop

Turn down a job when the minutes and the materials use up the price, or when the total crosses a license line you have not met. In California that line is $1,000, a permit, or an employee. The tool hides the break-even count when the job does not cover its variable cost. A remodel is not an odd job.

Questions people ask

How do you start a handyman business?

Start with small jobs whose price, materials, and labor you can add up before you accept them. The 2022 NAICS index lists “Handyman construction service, residential building” under 236118, the same code as residential remodeling contractors. A tool shelf price was not opened on November 6, 2026.

How much does it cost to start a handyman business?

This page does not have a national startup total. Insureon’s handyman page, updated July 31, 2026, says customers pay on average $81 a month for general liability. California’s minor-work line, effective January 1, 2025, is $1,000 for labor, materials, and all other items, and only when the job needs no permit and you employ no one. A van and a tool kit are separate quotes.

How much do handymen make?

On this page, a job pays when the price covers paid minutes and materials, and the month’s jobs cover the fixed costs you type. The tool prints a break-even job count only when that contribution is positive. No national weekly income was opened. A Bureau of Labor Statistics wage page for this trade returned HTTP 403 on November 6, 2026.

How many handyman businesses are there?

Census County Business Patterns 2023 counts 135,337 employer establishments in NAICS 236118. 109,661 have fewer than 5 employees, which is 109,661 ÷ 135,337, or 81.0%. The index also uses that code for residential remodeling general contractors, so 135,337 is not handymen alone. Commercial and institutional handyman construction service is listed under 236220, which has 39,072 establishments. Do not add the two counts.

Do I need a handyman license?

California’s Contractors State License Board says that as of January 1, 2025, a person who is not licensed may do a project under $1,000, including labor, materials, and all other items, only if the work needs no building permit and the person employs no one. Advertising for that work has to say the person is not licensed. A permit, a worker, or a bid over $1,000 requires a license. Other states are not yet researched. Do not copy California’s $1,000 onto another state.

How much is handyman insurance?

Insureon’s handyman page, updated July 31, 2026, says customers pay on average $81 a month for general liability, $105 a month for a business owner’s policy, $108 a month for workers’ compensation, and $188 a month for commercial auto. The method note uses the median of handymen who apply for quotes. The general-liability sample is $1 million per occurrence, $2 million aggregate, and a $500 deductible. Do not add the monthly figures into one premium.

What happens in California if the job is over $1,000?

The CSLB press release of December 30, 2024 says a bid over $1,000, permit work, or employing workers, by a person who is not licensed, is subject to legal action. It lists administrative fines of up to $15,000, jail of up to six months, and fines up to $5,000. That is one state’s release, not a national penalty.

How do you price a handyman job?

Type the price, the minutes on the job, the paid drive minutes, a loaded hourly rate, and the materials. Empty stays unknown. In California, add labor and materials before you accept the job and compare that total with the $1,000 line if you are not licensed. Break-even jobs appear only when the contribution is positive and fixed costs are entered.

When should I hire a helper?

In California, employing anyone removes the minor-work exemption even if the project is under $1,000. Hire when you hold the license the work requires and the contribution still covers the wage. The tool does not print a headcount.
